Nightmare on Elm Street: Awakening

As he awoke, Sean became aware of his suroundings. He was still in his bed, soft and warm, feeling as if he was in a womb; covered and protected. It was then that Sean realized that although he was still in his bed, he was not in his room. No longer did he see white walls with posters of Slipknot and Playboy Playmates, but an orgy of metal pipes twisting at all angles, some hissing like knotted snakes. As he stepped out of his bed, he should have felt soft carpet under his bare feet. Much to his surprise, however, his feet met damp, cold concrete. A single bulb illuminated the room. It flickered as if it would burn out at any moment.

Sean walked through a door and stepped into a vast boiler room. He felt as if he were being watched. Though he felt the watcher was a presence of another kind, as opposed to the ones making shadows in the distance. As he approached the shadows, hoping to find someone who could tell him where he was, Sean saw three blonde girls in white dresses. They were jumping rope and singing what appeared to be a rhyme.

"One, two, Freddy's coming for you...."

The words sent chills down Sean's spine. The girls continued in unison, seeming not to notice they now had an audience.

"Three, four, better lock your door...."

As they were singing, Sean thought he saw them crying tears of blood. To his horror, the faces of the children were beginning to melt, along with all of their flesh, pooling under their feet, entrails and all.

"Five, six, grab your crucifix....."

The girls, now merely skeletons, dresses still white as snow, were still singing the rhyme, unphased by their current situation. The pool of flesh and blood, now began to run as a river slowly toward Sean. He made a dash for the room his bed was in, still hearing the children's peculiar song.

"Seven, eight, gonna stay up late...."

He was met with a concrete wall and more pipes. 'How could this be?', he asked himself. He knew he had not gone far from where he began, yet it was as if he was somewhere else entirely. Sean saw what looked like an exit, and he made a run for it.

"Nine, ten, never sleep again!"

Sean was rewarded for his efforts by yet another dead end. After the last line was uttered, all was quiet in the boiler room. As he turned to go back to the main hallway, he was stopped in his tracks by the flesh river. It was blocking his only exit, forcing him to watch in disgust as the liquid began to pool and grow tall. It began to take shape and as it did, the shape began to look like a man. Suddenly, a red light draped over it. As the light parted, something else took the place of the original figure. The man that stepped from the light wore a tattered red and green sweater. His pants were covered with a combination of dirt, grease and blood. His work boots were scummy, his shoelaces frayed. He was burnt; the flesh that Sean could see was a mass of badly healed and unhealed wounds. Sean figured that he was wearing the brown fedora to cover up some of his scars. Given a choice between the two, Sean believed he would've much rather seen the pool of blood and disemboweled organs again than to have to view this hideous mess of a man. What frightened Sean the most was that glove. An old leather glove covered with a copper plate. Attached to it were four sharp blades which draped over his fingers like talons. The man smiled with rotten yellowed teeth as the teenager stared at his weapon of choice.

"Hey!" the burnt man cried, "My eyes are up here, big boy!" Then he laughed in a way that Sean thought was far from funny. It was then that he noticed a ladder to his left. Had that been there this whole time? Without giving it a second thought, Sean climbed until he got to the top. As he ran through the rafters, a thought crossed his mind: Could that man be the 'Freddy' those girls were singing about? As soon as he completed the thought, a voice behind him responded.

"Don't worry about my messangers," Freddy said. "You're my disciple now." Then Sean woke up.
