The debate rages on! Do you prefer the funny, one-liner spouting Freddy of Elm Street 4,5 and 6, or the more serious, "scary" Krueger of parts 1 and 2 (with Dream Warriors being the transitional point)? Stuart Heritage of the Guardian UK seems to be less than happy with Jackie Earle Haley's more "serious approach" to the character.
"Ask yourself this: now that you know the new Nightmare On Elm Street will be light on hi-jinks, are you still excited about going to see it? Of course you're not."
"It means that, in the new Nightmare On Elm Street, you probably won't see Freddy Krueger dress up as a French waiter and feed somebody to death. It means that Freddy won't murder anyone inside a comically dated videogame. It means that – and I can hardly bring myself to say this – Freddy won't perform any more novelty raps with the Fat Boys. Performing novelty raps with the Fat Boys was Freddy Krueger's raison d'etre. It was the thing he loved most of all."
You can read the rest of Heritage's article here, then let us know who you prefer; Freddy masquerading as the Wicked Witch of the West or the child killer, bastard son of one hundred maniacs!
P.S. My favorite comment on the article is from "arctral:"

The only time Freddy has Truly ever SCARED me was in the first one, He got annoying in the later ones, This Freddy Better be scary, Or I gaurantee you this movie will Bomb, But I have high hopes.
If the Freddie from 4-6 comes to be the one they use in this one, I wont be seeing it.... who thinks of NIGHTMARE on Elm Street and goes to it to LAUGH??? Im all for Freddie from tha 1st one where he pulls guy threw his bed and covers the room in blood... Freddie is violent, and he needs to stay that way
Are you kidding me, Freddy not violent in the later sequels. So stuffing some ones mouth full of food so their head explodes is just Disney. Or cutting the ropes to ones parachute so they fall 200 feet only to be impaled by a bed of spikes at the point of impact is childsplay. Freddy loves to kill in violent ways he's just so sick and twisted that he laughs about just as i do. Bon Appetite Bitch!
I liked both Freddy's. While 1 and 2 are and always will be my 2 favorites in the series, I liked the humerous side in Freddy, because it brought out more of his personality.
I have always loved the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, and just as everyone else was when they were 10 years old in the 80's, I was also terrified of Freddy Krueger! But, guess what, I hit puberty! And as much as it gave me fond memories to still watch the Elm Street Slasher, I must say that it just got flat out retarded as each sequal was made. I loved the first Nightmare movie still, because I do not want to laugh at my undead monster serial killers, I do not want them to crack jokes like some idiot. When I go to a movie, I want to feel as much as possible, that what I'm watching just has a small imaginative possiblity of being possible. I want Freddy to be the most evil, mean, child murdering, hateful, Son-of-A-Bitch ever to grace the big screen. I want NOOOOOO Jokes or campy one-liners. I want FEAR and EVIL!!!! I believe these writers and fans who want a funny, joking Freddy need to grow up, were not 10 anymore. The stupidity level should have risen since then!!!
How can someone have a movie blog and not now that it isn't ACTORS who make those decisions? Maybe he should be placing the blame on the right people. Or maybe he should, you know, stop being an annoying fanboy and wait until the movie comes out to judge if it's good or bad. But what do I know? I just like to think before I blog.
The role was written for Freddy to have very few lines, so basically it was written that way. No one-liners or puns in the script.
I for one prefer Freddy to be humorous. I am a huge fan of cheesy horror flicks like Army of Darkness, Grind House's Planet Terror, and even yes Killer Clowns from Outer Space. I like to laugh as i see people get decapitated or gutted. Freddy's one liners were perfect. "Welcome to prime time BITCH" is my all time favorite Freddy quote. At the same time i am not dissapointed that the new freddy is not corny. I always welcome new approaches to a classic tales. This new dark evil freddy could very well warm my heart. I will be first in line for this one. No matter what happens i will always be a NOES fan
I was always upset that Freddy never acted black!
