A Nightmare on Elm Street Script Review - Melodrama and Mystery Abound
When reading the script, the first thing that came to mind is how shallow and stereotypical the characters are. In the original film, the characters were basically meant to be regular kids, while in the remake they are more differentiated by the type of person they are. The characters are more of a smack in the face, rather than the subtle nuance in the original.
There are many references that set the film firmly in the present, such as kids playing Guitar Hero, Ipods, Podcasts, Google, a webcam death, bloggers, the "Dream World" mapped out on a computer and printed out, etc. It pretty much stinks of someone who is out of touch trying to make the movie relevant to today's youth by putting in references they don't realize are already dated.
To give a plot summary, it is probably easiest to compare and contrast it to the original film. Let's begin with the similarities. The Rod and Tina relationship in the original is pretty much echoed in the remake script by Kris and Jesse. Kris dies in essentially the same manner as Tina did in the original, while Jesse's death is a slashing in his jail cell, rather than a hanging. The bathtub scene with Freddy's glove emerging from the water is also retained.
As far as the differences, they are plentiful. First off, Nancy is made into a goth loner in the remake script, as compared to the regular girl with a boyfriend in the original. Her love interest in the script is a podcaster who she is mildly obsessed with.
The huge difference in the script is that much of the film revolves around Nancy and Quentin attempting to unravel the mystery of who Freddy is, why he is after them, and how they can stop him. In the original, these things were quickly revealed by Nancy's mother. In the script, they must go on an adventure to different locations, use the internet, and take great leaps in logic to find out this information.
The mystery element of the script really bogs the story down. The script attempts to take the audience on a ride that intially paints Freddy as a victim, but it is ultimately revealed that he is just as evil as he was in the original series. The real issue with this concept is that it defies all logic. For instance, multiple children forget they were molested in elementary school, even after being reminded of the events. They also jump to crazy conclusions that they will relieve themselves of Freddy haunting their dreams by burning the audio tapes of their testimony (that they somehow forgot happened). They would have been much better off just cutting to the chase and acknowledging Freddy as a child molester when they discover who it is.
There are quite a few jump scares and red herrings in the script, presumably to keep the horror tone while Nancy and Quentin are playing cold case detectives. A couple of deaths were clearly added to up the body count. The kill that kicks off the movie has a certain Suspiria quality to it, with a character getting killed and then dropped through a glass ceiling. A webcam death also stinks of being tacked on to keep the movie from dragging while Nancy plays Nancy Drew.
Well Freddy fans, if you are in the camp that wanted to revert to a darker, more serious Freddy, based on the script to the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie, that is exactly what you are going to get. Not only are the puns gone that ruined parts 5 and 6 of the original series, but so is the dark humor that most fans loved in the original film and Dream Warriors. In fact, the script is completely humorless and flat. Freddy remains a mystery for much of the film, as he is very slowly revealed. He is not seen in good light until better than halfway through the script. In the script, it is mentioned on a couple of occassions that you can see some of Freddy's bones due to him being so badly charred. Freddy is still killed by the parents, but it is made accidental as they were attempting to "Smoke him out" of a tool shed when it caught on fire due to the gas and such inside. I am not sure about the logic behind throwing a molotav cocktail into a shed to simply smoke him out, however.
The ending has some elements of the original, as Nancy ultimately determines that she needs to bring Freddy into the real world to kill him. While Nancy is looking for Freddy in the Dream World, Freddy gets to Quentin. He dumps a jar of poisonous spiders Quentin, with Freddy reminding Quentin that he feared spiders as a child (this part seemed like a real stretch as it was the only time Freddy attempted to use someone's fear against them). After a struggle with Freddy in the Dream World, Nancy's this led to a chase in the original film, in the remake, Nancy beats the shit out of Freddy with a shovel before stabbing him with his own glove. Freddy then falls into a furnace and sets himself on fire. The sudden turn of Nancy from a frail goth chick to one-liner spouting bad-ass at the ending is rather cheesy and out of character. The script ends with an open ending for a sequel.
Just a couple quick notes that people might be interested in. Crystal Lake is referenced in the script as a place where kids often went to summer camp. There is also a scene where Freddy uses a customized pitchfork to harass Nancy, which would indicate that his glove was not his only torture device.
Ultimately, the whole film's effectiveness is gonna come down to how well they establish the tone, because there is nothing special on paper. I was very disappointed that much of the script centered on a red herring plot. I would rather they were just straight-forward and got that aspect of the story over with, instead of dragging it out. Everyone knows they could not make Freddy into some wrongly accused vigilante. I also thought all the references to modern technology were rather forced, and a desperate attempt to update a film that didn't really need updating.
Here are the breakdowns on the teens, and their deaths:
Nancy - "Petite, approaching Goth" and somewhat anti-social.
Kris - Anchors the first act of the story. Her turbulent relationship with Jesse is made into a plot point. She begins the investigation into Freddy. She is killed by having her bloodied body levitating from the bed, and then slammed into the ceiling.
Jesse - Kris' boyfriend, "wild haired, coiled, anxious". He is implicated in the murder of Kris, goes to jail, and is killed by Freddy while in jail. The death was done in a manner to frame his cellmate.
Dean - "Clean and Preppy", Guitar Hero guru. His death is the obligatory "Quick death before credits to get the audience interested" variety. It has a certain Suspiria vibe with him crashing down through a glass ceiling into a room full of teens.
Marcus - Blogger who is tormented by Freddy. He makes a map of the Dream World that Nancy and Quentin print out and use (yeah, I know how bad that sounds).
You kids need to get a clue. Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor, far better than Englund or England or whatever his name is. I'm certain JEH will do a great job. If he can give an Oscar caliber performance in Little children I'm sure he will have no problem in a horror movie remake.
I'm afraid already! It looks like a creepy movie indeed :O
bed and breakfast Barcelona
I haven't given up hope. Bay is 1 for 2 on remakes. I thought TCM was good, but Friday the 13th sucked. Not really feeling the new make up, but Haley was the best part of Watchmen and I think he'll do a good job. Freddy has always been my favorite, so I hope they don't destroy it...
This movie is gonna suck. Its Platinum dunes, they did a horrible job on the TCM remake and an even worse job on F13. I have no hopes for this film!
I would like to to tell that a reliable essay writing service seems a light on the road of term papers accomplishing. Therefore, people are able use it anytime they would like to buy essay writing.
Very very Nicea
Guys, really?
Half of you are grown children crying because another actor is playing Freddy and the other half are crying because you didn't like the script. This script sounds terrible, yes. I'm sure it could be pulled off well. Also the script is not the finished product. I'm sure this movie will turn out VERY different from the script as movies often do considering that the people who write the script are not the same people who act in it and direct it (they have quality control). This director seems like he really cares about this film and is doing everything he can to appease the fans over even the smallest things in the teaser trailer. And to you idiots who can't handle the smallest notion of change, this has to happen and if you don't like it then you can sit at home and rewatch all the old movies. This movie will never live up to your childhood nightmare experiences because it was your childhood and movies have so much more impact on children then they do on adults. These movies needed to be revived and they needed to be refreshed and they needed to be brought back to their roots. You could make a frame for frame remake of the original with all the same actors if you want, because listening to your comments that seems like its exactly what you want.

Okay, first of all when a movie script is mysteriously leaked onto the internet I wouldn't automatically assume it's the real deal--I mean come on it's the internet for crying out loud! And another thing, quit hating on Jamie...I read on the official site that Jamie is still working on the Freddie's voice. The only purpose of movie trailers is to make people aware that the movie is coming out...for all we know that could have been one of the first shots they took. Do you really think they would want to give away everything before the movie even comes out? So no that's no I don't believe that is Freddie's official voice or face because I have seen and heard what Jamie can sound like and he can pull it off...have you seen Watchmen?
Look it up and see for yourselves.
This is gonna be horrible i believe.... They shuda kept Englund as Freddy, this Freddy (Haley) is not scary whatsoever!! His voice is not deep, he is tiny, and if u pause the part in the trailer where they show his face.... CGI, and NOT SCARY AT ALL. Prayer is wat is needed to save this from being a tragedy.
Okay so I admit... I was one of those fans who constantly wrote everyone involved with the original movies begging for a new one. I got Freddy Vs. Jason. I went and saw it... I was impressed, not the best one I've seen but hey I got Freddy back and I was happy. FREDDY as in ENGLUND! Okay sorry had to add that.
NOW.... I was looking again for another Freddy (Englund) movie... saw the info on this one originally a while ago got all super excited... then found out, new Freddy (Not Englund OH THE HORROR), changin the script, and then I read this.
*Sighs* I am livid... heartbroken... near protesting... and yet I knew it was bound to happen. Part of me is a little heartbroken someone else didn't do this (ROB ZOMBIE) because I have a feeling they are going to blow this and bad... just from reading the script. It's bad enough I gotta deal with the crappy horrors they got out now... I didn't need someone to mess up my favorite damn series. I mean damn... Rob Zombie did a decent job with Halloween... and for those of you commenting on that new Friday the 13th that it was good... I should beat the hell out of you. JASON VORHEES DID NOT RUN! Granted... it wasn't a complete waste of time, but I had some complaints with it... at least Rob Zombie kept true to Michael!
And even still... I will wait until it's on video to see it for to see it in theatre at least for me would lead to me being mad as hell walking out demanding my money back for yet another crappy damn remake. Granted... I will see it eventually just not until it's on video... for those of you saying I will be getting Freddy in this... that is a LIE I will not be getting Freddy I'll be getting a damn knockoff of a character that didn't need to be remade. For those of you going to see it... I feel for you, but I shall NOT be one of you.
okay you freddy fanatic i'll be honest with you the original freddy sucked hard he wasn't scary he was sad pathetic a disgrace to horro icons get a grip loser freddy sucked from the beggining he can't get any worse. the original nightmare on elm street was a load of crap it sucked bad it was terrible i almost forget about the whole freddy thing until i saw the trailer for the remake and sure i only went to see it for katie cassidy thomas dekker and kyle gallner but to me it was way better than the original. The originaal was just embarassing so from your comments i can tell you have no taste but jason vorhees was pretty cool anyway thats all i have to say. GET A LIFE, FREDDY SUCKED FROM THE BEGGINING AND SO DID HIS MOVIES!!!!!! THE REMAKE WAS VICIOUS BUT THEY COULD HAVE A BETTER NANCY!!!!!!
Hey dude, I know this mainly about Freddy on this blog, H/E, for you to even bash the team on "Friday" and claim Jason Voorhees never ran? You are a complete and blithering idiot! Have you not seen Friday the 13th Part: 3-D, or the FInal Chapter? Sure he doesn't run full fledge, and is more like a lumbering chase, but he does in fact run moron. I don't even know if I'll ever find my way back to this outdate posting page, but I hope you do and think about what you want to say and research your "facts" first! As For "Nightmare" I say give it a shot, Why not? If Robert Englund himself is coll with the re-boot then WE all should be to.
Where's the DEEP freddy voice? make up can be changed, but that voice needs to be executed properly.
Englund had it down perfect, even though they tweeked it a bit, sounded fearful.
Watching the trailer, I'd probably smack freddy around if i met him, he's a skinny, soft talking peado. Nothing scary about that, he has nothing to be scared of.
No wonder Nancy smacks him about in the real world, she probably turned hero when seeing what he really is lmao.
Sort it out, get Englund back for part two!
Okay folks, I get all the angst and I understand.. Robert's Freddy was fantastic, Wes Cravens Movie was fantastic but everyone needs to give this a chance. It is a remaking AND!!! re-imagining of a horror classic, I am a massive Freddy fan i search the internet for anything he appeared on whether as a cartoon or a concept (simpsons) but I myself am excited for this new chance to introduce Freddy to the people of today who have no idea what a good villain looks like (see Prom Night and you will know what a shit slasher film is). Imagine the horrific sights of gore we will see in this remake. Freddy's burns will look more realistic than ever! Sure it is Jackie but still give it a chance! Remakes can be crap but it will not ruin the concept and the nightmare that is Freddy Krueger
this shit makes me sick everytime i think about it
GET A LIFE YOU PATHETIC MORON FREDDY KRUEGER SUCKED FROM THE BEGGINING HE WAS STUPID NOT SCARY ACTUALLY AFTER LOOKING AT HIM I WANTED TO BURST OUT LAUGHING NOT HIDE UNDER MY COVERS. HE PUT ME TO SLEEP HE WAS SO PATHETIC. THE REMAKE IS WAY BETTER THEN THAT POOR EXCUSE FOR AN ORIGINAL. I LIKE JACKIE EARLE HARLEY BETTER THAN ROBERT WHATEVER. SO SUCK IT UP ITS JUST A FRICKIN MOVIE. THEY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED MAKING NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREETS AFTER THE FIRST ON BECAUSE THE REST SUCKED EVEN WORSE EXCEPT FOR HTE REMAKE. FOR YOU TO EVEN HAVE REALLY LIKED NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET ITS CLEAR YOU HAVE NO TASTE IN HORRO NOW FRIDAY THE 13TH WAS A HORROR MOVIE!!!
I'm gonna blow my brains out already.
I don't mind all remakes just Platinum Dunes remakes. So if we have no choice but to see these films remade I rather someone else remake them. I'm tired of what they think are slick films made by washed-up music video directors.
Ok guys. So Englund isn't Krueger anymore. And he will be missed. He isn't a Jason or a Michael were you can throw a mask on anybody (although Hodder will alwyas be Jason to me). But why all the hatred? I am of the mindset that Englund's Freddy will never be forgotten. It is time for a new generation to have their fun. Personally, I liked the new Friday the 13th and am excited to see what PD can do for our favorite bastard son. The real shame would be for those of us who love horror to hate so hard on this flick that it becomes a celluloid pariah and we never see another Nightmare film on the silver screen again. Be it starring Englund, Haley, or anyone else. Even if this movie does bomb, at least we have the chance to see Freddy on the big screen, one last time.
Freddy is Englund - Englund is Freddy
Englund is the only one that can play this character, he has some sort of evil look to him in all the movies he's been in.
ENGLUND SUCKS BUTT HE SUCKED IN THE ORGINAL AND ALL THAT FOLOWED HE WAS NO WHERE NEAR SCARY. SO SHUT UP YOU STUPID PRICKS.
This script sounds…..ok. There are a lot of things this movie needs fine tuning on but I am sure they are doing that now. All the characters seem one dimensional and probably are, but that is why they are their, to fill the body bags. The sleuthing seems to go back to older horror films when they felt the need to draw things out, but honestly most people, if not all, will know what to expect going in. They are going to the film to see Freddy, not the teens. Why would they like to keep him hidden so much, why the unnecessary sub diffuse, why the elongated plot? Because this is not my Freddy Krueger, or your Freddy Krueger, or even Wes Craven’s Freddy Krueger. This is Jackie Earle Haley’s Freddy Krueger, Samuel Bayer’s Freddy Krueger, and Platinum Dune’s Freddy Krueger. They re-imaged him and his story to their specifications, and sorry to say, but I am ok with it. Gone are the days of Freddy’s wise cracking horror, him using peoples fears against them, and us watching Robert Englund put so much of himself in that role. But like I said this is not our Freddy Krueger, and rather than shun it and go sulk in a corner pretending its not happening or wont exist (Like we tried to do with Freddy’s Dead), we should just except it, watch it, and judge it by its own accord. Because lets face it, nothing they could do is every going to live up to the original, no matter how much time, money or talent they put into it. Nightmare on elm street will always be their, were ever we happened to leave it and if the fancy strikes us we could always go watch it again and again, but the remake is still coming and no amount of tears or pleas will change that. Best just suck it up and move on. Now if you excuse me I am going to flame the poop out of who ever is remaking Clue……..
This script is obviously not real. Come on, do you really think they will F#%* up Nightmare On Elm Street. This movie will beyond F#$%@*% rock
??? The script is real, however, I think they have made some changes to it if you read Brad Fueller's blog below.
Aaaaw shit already!
Michael Bay....will you PLEASE stop making banal remakes of classic genuine horror films.
You have no interesting ideas, you follow a stereotypical formula that you seem to believe all horror films are based around, your films are pathetic jockulatory fantasies in which you hide a bad film behind a plethora of updated special effects and unsuccessful CGI in the hopes that people are stupid enough to think that modern digital effects make a movie good despite the script/actors/directing/photography's mediocrity (unfortunately many people are, which is how you've managed to last this long).
the fact that you decided to take on Nightmare on Elm St, one of the greatest horror films, and icons of horror makes me wish the entire film industry filed a restraining order against you, but unfortunately we will never live in such a perfect world.
Michael Bay has nothing to so with this movie.. Samuel Bayer is Directing this, Producers just lend their name to a project and help with the financial and business aspects of a film.
His 'take' on anything will be absent form this film, it's Bayer's call....blame him
Platinum Dunes is Michael Bay's company...he could hire a new director if he wanted...he has more control over this movie than anybody else...he's also an asshole.
Just because he owns the company doesn't mean jack shit. He's not the sole owner of the company nor the sole producer. And a new director isn't necessarily gonna change the bad writing either. Everyone is pretty much to blame for here.
JX, pissed is an under statement, this movie is killing me.
I thought it would be a cool idea to do a remake because we have this technogly to make this better. However i am very upset that Robert Englund will not be playing freddy, how do you guys get off this that? Rob is the icon of Freddy. He did all of them even when he was scary! if you want him scary then tell him BE SCARY you dont go behind his back and get someone new. He did Freddy vs Jason what 6 years ago what makes you think he wouldnt do this? Freddy is who he is. Im not sure how this movie will be but from what ive read on this it sounds almost nothing like the orginal and i dont think it will do well...alot of NOES fans are gunna be pissed.
Having read this... so far okay. Come on everyone you are sounding off on the webcam killing did any of you see the other nightmare movies when someone got killed by the TV in the hospital, and someone got killed off in a video game. Come on I don't see any of you coming up with any ideas. Remember you get killed off because you feel asleep.
You guys should be making fun of Freddy that his real name is Fredrick.
I really hope whatever script this blogger was reading is not the script they are using to film this movie. All of these ideas sound absolutely terrible. A webcam death? Are you f'n kidding me?! And being goth is pretty much a 90's sort of thing... very not cool anymore. If this is what we're going to see, this movie will bomb for sure....
As much as the changes sound lame, I'd still rather see how it plays out on film. Aside from the kidnapping in their Friday The 13th remake, it was still a fine slasher film. Some of these that sound lame or blunt could be toned down on film. Or hell, there might've been rewrites already.
